Life and Works\par
\b0 Of Greek origin (his real name was Domenikos Theotocopoulos and he was born i
n Candia on Crete in 1541), he started to work in his native country in a strongly Byzantine style. After a period in Italy, where he worked with Titian in Venice and then in Rome, he developed a highly original language of his own, daring and stylized.
In 1575, he moved from Italy to Spain, where he tried to become the Court Painter to Philip II and to take part in the decoration of the \b \cf4 \ATXht122 Escorial\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 . But his painting, very different from the schemes in favor at the time,
did not please the king, and around 1576, he moved to \b \cf4 \ATXht140 Toledo\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 , a city of secondary importance and a long way from \b \cf4 \ATXht134 Madrid\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 but rich in cultural stimuli. In fact, it turned out to be the i
deal setting for the evolution of his art. The dramatic character and spiritual force of his work earned him the approval of the religious and aristocratic circles of Toledo, who gave the painter numerous commissions. El Greco left no school behind him,
and his only follower was his son, Jorge Manuel. He died in Toledo in 1614.\par
